The school opened in 1958 with its first class of Sophmores. The class of 1960 was the first to graduate from Mt. Rainier. It was the first High School in Des Moines since Des Moines High School closed and the students moved to Highline High School in Burien. There are 1,388 students enrolled at Mt. Rainier High School in grades 9-12 for the 2003-2004 school year. The school mascot is the ram.
