King County Water District No. 54 serves the area bounded approximately by South 214th Street, Kent-Des Moines Road, 13th Avenue South, and Puget Sound. The water is supplied through local wells with an emergency intertie connected to the Highline Water District (used when cleaning the tanks). With the passing of time the styles of water towers in Des Moines have significantly changed. Once they were rustic wooden towers adjacent to the Field House. Now the water tower situated between City Hall and the Police Department looks like a giant blue inverted Genie bottle. To the southeast is located a new 660,000 gallon storage tank. Either way the Des Moines water is excellent allowing residents to brag that it is the best water in the state.
