1931

  • The North Pacific Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church established Covenant Beach Bible Camp at the mouth of Des Moines Creek by leasing Draper Park. A former beachfront dance hall was converted into the camp tabernacle.
  • The Highline Spanish Castle opened at Midway on Pacific Highway South near Kent-Des Moines Road. Built by Archie Bacon and Frank Enos, the Moorish-style ballroom became one of the Pacific Northwest's most famous dance halls and later inspired Jimi Hendrix's song "Spanish Castle Magic." 1933

  • August 20 - Saltwater State Park has a second dedication. After funding for state parks was restored, another park dedication was held. 15,000 people attended, and another 5,000 were turned away because there was no parking space left within a mile radius. Speeches were delivered by Governor Clarence D. Martin and the mayors of Tacoma and Seattle. A squadron of planes from Sand Point Naval Air Station performed stunt flying. Miss Diana Jewett of Renton was named the winner of the "park’s first beauty contest." After the dedication, she presided over a ball at the nearby Spanish Castle Ballroom.

  • Gilbert Greenhouse and Sawmill at 3283 South Star Lake Road was built. This was the second Greenhouse in the Star Lake area.

1938

  • Del Osterhouldt's Texaco Service Station housed the first Fire Station. It was located on the northwest corner of Marine View Drive South and South 225th Street.
  • September — Federal Way High School opened when an addition to the original Federal Way School building began serving high school students. H. J. Winter was appointed the school's first principal.

1939

  • Rose Wilcox opened Rose's Hi-Way Inn on Pacific Highway South. The restaurant became one of the best-known roadside establishments on highway US 99 between Seattle and Tacoma. Fire destroyed the building in the early morning hours of March 17, 2003.
  • November 129 — At 11:47 p.m., a magnitude 5.8–6.2 earthquake centered in southern Puget Sound shook Des Moines and the rest of King County. Chimneys collapsed, plaster cracked, and buildings were damaged throughout Western Washington, but no deaths or serious injuries were reported.
